Best price/source for a Scan Tool for a 95?

Would like to get one as soon as possible but don't want to buy the wrong one. The local parts stores do not carry ones that will work on my car so I need to order one. What is the best price I can get one for and where should I order it from?

What exactly are you looking to do? My first suggestion would be an AKM cable and Freescan. If that doesn't do enough for you, then get Datamaster (works with AKM cable).

At the present time I am just trying to figure out why it does not run properly. In the future I may do some mods but that is not a priority at the moment.

I bought a 95 Z28 Convertible from a used car dealer. He said that it had been reposessed and he bought it at an auction and has no idea what may be wrong with it. He said that when he bought it at the auction is was marked as "No Start"(this was written on the windshield in crayon) He said he had been able to get it started but could not get it to rev much over idle so he had not test driven it. I bought it for a good price knowing it did not run properly.

I have gotten it started several times now. It starts and runs with a miss at idle speeds. After it has run a couple minutes it will rev up some but is definately not running cleanly, acts like it is too rich. If I let it warm up fully and then try to rev it up it will backfire and carry on and then stall out. Once it is fully warmed up I have not been able to get it to restart. Sort of acts like water in the gas so I tried putting in a bunch (four12 ounce cans) of dry gas. I let is set overnight then started it this morning. Ran for approx. 20 mins. but then when it warmed up and I would try to rev it up it backfired some and shut off and I was unable to restart it.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong with it?

Check for the most economical things first...

1) coil
2) wires
3) water in some places
4) ignition control module
5) the end.. opti

IT could be many things.. does it have an SES light?

What you are going to pay for a scantool is what you will pay for AKM cable and datamaster.. and then in the near future you can mod with that cable.

For what you are needing an AKM cable and freescan (free, link from the AKM cable site) should get you started. Freescan will show you all the codes and many other things, but just doesn't have any logging ability.

I assume the AKM Cable and software require a laptop or a desktop computer within reach of the cable? I don't currently have a laptop and can't get car to desktop.

What stand alone scan tools would you suggest?

Look for autoxray or actron. Check their sites then look around ebay. Keep in mind the '95 models have an OBDII connector with OBDI diagnostics.
