best MAF?

hey guys,i finally got my Z on a scanner and it says my MAF is bad. it will cut out on me once you try to throttle down on it ,only when its warm. the scanner is a "snap on" brand so its on of the best so im trusting what it tells me. my question is this, due to XMAS and 4 kids cash is tighter than a ducks a** !
do i go used, reman,or just get a brand new one and what kind is the best but will not shred my pocket?! thanks guys. and i also want to say you guys are such a great crowd! i absolutely love my z and im not exactly a mechanic but i know a little bit. what ever i learn in my MANY journeys with my Z28 (and there will be many!) i will be sure to help any one on this site in any way possible. every bit i can give back, trust me i will! thanks guys and happy holidays!

You might want to get a can of MAF cleaner...available at autozone or advance and try that before investing money in a new one. Just a thought.

Need to provide more info - year of vehicle would be a good starter. OBD-I or OBD-II? What was the specific MAF code you got? Not all MAF codes are the result of a faulty MAF in OBD-II. The code could be the result of a wiring problem, MAF needs to be cleaned, air is bypassing the MAF, etc.

I am with Fred on this and would particularly stress looking at the wiring.

OBD1 and the scanner specifically said MAF Failure.

Re: best MAF?

OK.... since you didn't give us the exact code, let's look at what's available - DTC 48 indicates "Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor circuit". That's taken directly from Shoebox's LT1-specific code list. Could be the MAF sensor is dead, could be the wiring is faulty.

Key on, check in the harness connector between the pink wire (12V) and the black/white wire (ground). Should read 12V DC. If you have 12V, and there is no evidence of damaged pins on the harness connector or on the sensor, check the output of the sensor with the engine running. If your multi-meter has a frequency capability, measure the frequency between the yellow wire and the black/white wire at idle. Should read about 2,600Hz. Take it out on the road, WOT/max RPM. Should approach 8-9,000Hz.

Best replacement is a factory MAF. I believe GM now calls out the same replacement MAF number for both the LT1 and the LS1, and its a lot cheaper than the original LT1 MAF was. Then there's the option of a used part, either from one of our Marketplace forums, or from a junkyard.

just got back from a quick test ride after cleaning the MAF with the cleaner and it is running like a Z should! im happy as hell but i just dont want to get my hopes up too far. it would normally cut out at even half throttle when it hit like 145f but it was at like 150f just now and with WOT it did not act up AT ALL!!!
if i get any more trouble ill be back on. time to go do a quick oil and filter change. thanks guys!
