alot of the new brake cleaners (including the one i use and posted above) are now non-chlorinated, and safer for you., but other than that i completely agree with everything you have said

other than for something absolutely necessary using gas or kero as a cleanser is very dangerous, and pointlessly so at that.

there is nothing to laugh at about that at all man, these are all harsh chemicals being talked about here, and very bad for your skin. i do not wear gloves, mostly because my skin is used to it but glasses are a must. this stuff hurts when you get it in your eyes

Yes, everybodies grandfather used gasoline or diesel or kerosene or whatever. It was stupid then and it's stupid now....

Haha you make it sounds like we're 5 and play with fire while we are doing it.

It's called taking precautions. My Dad and sometime with me helping him always cleaned parts with gasoline outside. Though half the time he did smoke..... hmmm yeah i kept telling him thats not a good idea, but he knows what he's doing whether if it's safe or not.

And it's better economic wise as we don't burn a couple of gallons of gas to go down and pay $XXX amount of dollars to buy part cleaner when you can use half a gallon or less to clean some parts.

whatever get's the job done the quickest cheapest way is how he does it.

but personally if I was going at it alone, i'd most likely but some umm more "proper" stuff to clean with

To tell you the truth, I don't really care if you use gasoline to clean parts, or brush your teeth or whatever you want. I don't care if your Dad, whom knows what he's doing, washes parts in gasoline while smoking. Interesting precautions to say the least. But, the bottom line is that I don't care what you, yourself, do. However, giving other the advice to use gasoline to clean parts is just irresponsible....and people that are new to things should know both sides of the story.

I'm done here...have a nice day.

Wow didn't see this going this far. I own a auto repair shop and safety is very important to me. I clean engines withbrake clean if i have something i need to clean quick. I use napa parts washer fluid in my small parts washer and i have a cuda that uses a soap and hot water to clean that works awesome. I also clean engines when i assemble them with a simple green apple dawn dishwashing solution(i like the smell),blow dry the parts and then i spray the parts with marvel mystery oil or pb blaster to prevent flash rust. I had a tub of kerosene and gasoline mix in my shed for over 10 years and never had a problem. I would never do that again but there is alot of people who have done it. Parachutes fail and people live but i won't take the chance. If you want one of the best degreasers out there, i use a chemical from warsaw chemical called ad2000 and it is wicked. Be safe

He wanted to know what works good to clean parts.
So I gave him a suggestion from experience on what I know that works really good. Pretty sure this is one reason for this forum in the first place; giving advice. I never said you should care about me or what I do, nor do I care that you don't care; this thread isn't to help you out or me fyi. Its for the OP.

But thanks for the head chewing, evidently someone pissed in your corn flakes that day. Oh the brushing your teeth part was SO FUNNY...

Next time when someone has question, I'll make sure to treat them like they are five because the probably won't know how to handle flammable products in a safe manor or other chemicals. Gasoline being flammable = common sense people.

At least he has his options laid out for him.

Brake Cleaner
Gas/kerosene
Actual Part degreaser products

Calling people idiotic because they know how to handle and use gas to clean parts = lame

Nice day to you also, sir. Watch out for that yellow milk!

I used Purple Power a scrub brush and a water hose to clean my block and trans. Then dried and blew out oil passages with compressed air and wiped the cylinders with oil. It worked very good and its biodegradable.

Using gasoline is not a good idea. Taking simple precautions makes sense. Any other approach is foolish and irresponsible. b w hunter told it like it is.

Gas/kero is my preferred solvent for heavy deposits. If you're the kind of idiot that would set yourself on fire, then don't use it. Or anything else mentioned in this thread...
