if you are worried about emissions and passing with ease, get edelbrocks. I'm going with Single cat MACS. I will pass the sniffer, but not visual(no carb number, removed 1 cat)

my buddy showed no improvements w/ his edlebrock... just went to the track last saturday and he got 14.4 w/ a shiftkit and edlebrock exhaust and headers

his best was 14.0 and his sister used to get 14.4's w/o the headers

but also same track her ls1 got a 13.8 and a 14.1

and their dad got a 13.0 with his SL55 AMG benz so i think the track sucks... it was about 75-85* that day

The best is probably 1 3/4" SLPs for single cat. All other California legal shorties are 1 5/8". Hooker makes California legal shorties too. I got mine from Jet Hot. Whateverheaders you decide on, I would recommend getting them coated and using Stage 8 bolts.

I'm running the AS&M Mid length Headers with 1-3/4" primaries. They have all the smog hookups, Just no CARB#. I plan on passing smog one way or another.

Look into JBA headers. They are pricy, do have a CARB #, come coated, were installed by myself with no fitment problems and improved my HP (with a addition of a few other mods at the same time like the Lt4 KM, cutout, new wires and plugs) from 305 to 323 on a mustang Dyno. I have passed Calif Emissions 4 year in a row from 2 different shops. Not much else I can say except...you will get what you pay for especially later.

i have the ceramic coated edelbrock shorties. the carb eo is stamped right on the top of the drivers side header so there is no missing the number. i have no idea why why your buddy showed no improvement. i smoked two different M6's. one on the freeway and one from the hole. i did the whole thing (cat and cat back with it) so that may have had an affect. there was a definate change. i dont have any dyno numbers to go by except the butt-o-meter and knowing the guy i beat out of the hole. the only mods at the time were the cai and the whole exhaust. those stock headers are a certified POS. anything would be an improvement.

The SLP do have a CARB# and they are 1 3/4. I have them on mine and had no problems passing the smog test and visual inspection. I just gave them the CARB # to all the stuff I had on the car.

For shorties, I would get the slp's. They are stainless steel and 1-3/4" and are carb legal. My second choice would be the Macs, even though they are not carb legal.

If you decide to go all out and get long tubes, flp's are it. They have a.i.r. and e.g.r. connections and the kit comes with 2 cat converters and ceramic coated y-pipe. I passed the smog test no questions asked last year. It was a test-only station and the guy didn't care what I had on the car. It passed with flying colors with the flp headers and their cats. You do have to remove the oil cooler though if you have one on your car. No biggie. The headers install without moving the engine.

Long tubes aren't technically legal since they add an extra cat converter (now 2 instead of 1). Ya figure the car is going to run cleaner with 2 cats than one, it did. If you find the right shop, you will pass.

And the sound from longtubes is no comparison to shorties, it is a lot deeper (bassier).
