Do a good visual inspection of all the pulleys looking for flatspotting or edge wear. Spin the free moving ones and check for wobbles or rough spots. Good chance it is idler pulley. The belt can cause alot of damage when it fails so definately locate the problem. I would say its either a bad pulley or something is loose or out of alignment. Edge wear points to alignment and flat spotting points to bad pulley.

The belt itself can also help diagnose the problem. Look for edge wear or flat spotting on it also.

Re: Belt problems

Okay I will take a look at it tomorrow and try all of what you have mentioned and see what I come up with.
But as for the edge ware that is where it starts it will set about 2-3 groves off the crank pulley I can put it back on and 15-20 miles it is back off 2-3 groves.
It starts to get chewed on the outside.

Re: Belt problems

Check the crank pulley for a wobble, due to the hard rubber ring that holds the two rings of the damper together cracking.

Re: Belt problems

I checked all the pulleys that I could turn all seemed good the A/C delete had a little back and forth play. The crank pulley was tight no flat spots on the belt only missing 2-3 groves off it where it was chewed up.

Re: Belt problems

You have to see if the crank pulley has movement from side to side.

Re: Belt problems

My tensioner went w/out warning this winter.. I don’t drive the car in the winter but start it up every few weeks.. I heard the sounded like the AC compressor struggling to spin. At 1st I thought the compressor just seized up but on further inspection I found the tensioner self-destructed and was not applying enough pressure to the belt for the compressor to turn. I ordered a brand new one from Rock for $40.. When I took the old one off it was toast and from the sediment around it appeared to be failing for a while.. I never had any issue w/ belts getting chewed up until this winter. It’s easy enough to take off and inspect. For what is worth my car has kind of low miles 85K and always garaged and it failed.
