Bare necessities

Trying to do a super cheap budget rebuild. No dmg is done, Im just trying to get a set of forged pistons in. Whats the absolute cheapest I can do this including machine work?

For example, if the cyl's are good looking can I get by with a summit 4.0 bore kit and just a hone w/ balance?

If i do have to go with a 4.030 setup whats the min I can get by with on machine work? I doubt I should just by new 4.0 pistons and drop them in.....

Thanks guys.

Yes you can go with 4.00 forged pistons on the stock bore, just measure the pistons and hone to the reccomended clearance of the piston manufacturerer.
Ball hones work best for me, they put a nice pattern in and do it more uniformly than the cheap spring loaded flat hones, now if you buy the expensive flat hones that apply their blocks evenly then go with those.

How does the crank look, make sure the wear on all journals are even , yo may need it turned , then of course appropriate sized bearings will be needed.

Re: Bare necessities

So assuming the crank and rods check out ok,

I can hone the block, throw in some 4.0's with some ARP bolts where appropriate button it up and have it balanced and be done with it?

Yep The factory rods with ARP bolts are pretty good peices for what youre wanting. The factory crank will take alot as well. Just make sure all your clearances are in order and lube it all up good.

I see that you plan on getting the assembly balanced, which is mandatory IMO. Just be forewarned that it's going to cost ~$300 for the balancing alone because of the amount of Mallory metal that will need to be added to the crank.

Re: Bare necessities

I know and I hate that.

You said it was mandatory in your oppinoin, but from what I read it is a necessity no matter who you ask. I wish it was simple as swapping them and going. Oh well with the money Ill be spending on this project whats a few hundred?
