Baffling Oil Leak
Baffling Oil Leak
Had this leak since I swapped in a new set of heads. The oil appears to be originating just above the oil filter. I've already had the intake off again and back on, feels dry. I've also had the oil pressure sending unit off twice, put thread sealant on it and can't see how that could be causing the problem, and there wasn't any evidence of leaking upon inspection of the sensor. There is only so many places that oil could come from and I'm at a loss. I've considered the possibility of the rear main seal but it doesn't appear to be leaking and besides the oil I'm seeing is in the wrong place if that was the cause.
Any ideas greatly appreciated. BTW, new valve cover gasket, oil cooler o-ring gasket, etc. etc.
Help me please.

Re: Baffling Oil Leak
I Think We Both May Be Having This Same Oil Leak. Is It Leaking Above The Black Piece Where You Screw The Oil Filter To?? My Oil Leak Seems To Be Coming From The Connection Between That Black Component And The Pan...i Dont Know What It Might Be....this Black Thing Has Like A Sensor Or Some Wire Going To It Right????
Re: Baffling Oil Leak
The "Black Thing" that you screw your oil filter to is an oil cooler that has two coolant lines going to the radiator and water pump to cool the oil. Just above the oil filter on the side of the block is the oil pressure sending unit. Had both parts off and have checked them for leaks with no luck so far. I'm about to go the ultaviolet method next. It really doesn't make very much sense, there's only so many places that oil can come from. This is actually a pretty small leak but more annoying because it drops on my headers and stinks.
Re: Baffling Oil Leak
There is a small plug just above the oil filter on mine. It could be leaking from there. Mine was leaking after I screwed the supply line for the ATI in there but I suppose it could be loose.
Re: Baffling Oil Leak
Update for those interested. I did the UV dye thing and it's pretty clear that the leak is actually coming from between the block and the oil cooler. I've already replaced that O-ring gasket and a visual inspection reveals nothing. I'm seriously considering the oil cooler delete option mostly because I don't want to mess with it anymore. It was hard to spot without the kit because it was difficult to tell where the oil was originating from. The kit is actually pretty cool, you could pinpoint very small leaks with this thing.
Update to the update. I've finally definitely found the leak(s). This is after removing the oil cooler, which was probably fine. Anyways, used the UV kit another time after cleaning the block thoroughly with Brakleen. I've got three or four small leaks coming from between the heads and the block. These are fresh heads, with brand new Felpro gaskets.
I really didn't think this was possible, but it's definitely the source. I have no water in my oil, but it is possible that I have a very small amount of oil in my coolant. I've thought that I've been smelling coolant burning, along with the oil that's been leaking onto my headers, and I've noticed that the coolant seems to be going down faster than normal. The leaks are very small, and very annoying.
I'm going to try re-torquing the head bolts, but I have little faith that this will fix the problem. I'm probably looking at yanking the heads, and running them over to a machine shop to have them milled. Really makes me angry but if my car didn't **** me off it wouldn't be a Camaro. So if you have a small nagging oil leak, and can't find it. It is actually possible to leak oil from under the cylinder head and not have coolant in your oil like the typical blown head gasket.
