Bad cold starts
Bad cold starts
After my car sits for awile and is very cold outside it is hard to start and have to us the carb trick of puttin the gas to the floor and maby it starts then. When it starts after several mins of trying it idles very rough for the first min or so. You can smell raw gas and smoke rolls, i also have the 0-2000 hesitaion. I kno plugs are a ****ty brand (champion) wires are stock ( i kno another bad thing) and the accel box. Any suggestions?
I may be wrong but I don't think the ole carb thing works on fuel injected cars
How cold is cold, I work at night and the coldest morning I have had was -21 and it never misses a beat(althought the power steering pump sounds like it is going to explode
) I would start with the simple things like plugs and wires and mabye a fuel filter.

I was having this problem too, I found what fixed it for me was using a different gas. I had been using Amoco Ultimate from a cheap little dive of an Amoco station was cheaper than the rest. I stopped going there, and the problems have stopped. Still use Amoco Ultimate though.
Actually the carb thing does work on these cars! When I would go away for a week then come back my car would take awhile to start, so I would press the gas to the floor when turning the motor over and black smoke (rich) come out the rear. Now it starts right up everytime. It ended up being a worn out coil wire and my fuel filter was right dirty! Replace those 2 parts and go from there.
fuel filter is new and the carb thing somehow works for me. also the grade gas thing might be right it only does it sometime, hmm the battery also seems sluggish but it is a optima red top!! I dunno. i will turn the key and hold it turns slow but not real slow every time i start it, but worse when been sittin. but when i hold the key on the start position it doesnt show any life untill i turn it back then it coughs and sputters and then i repeat.
I believe your problem is simple. The fuel pump is energized 2 ways. Through the relay like normal and through the oil pressure switch in emergency. If the relay drops out for what ever reason (bad connection, wire problem fuse or other) the switch can keep the fuel pump running. This has the effect at start up of having to crank alot especially in cold weather to start. It's on page 6E3-C2-3 of the 94 shop service manual. The switch has to have 4PSI of oil pressure before it makes contact. Try this, before you start the car in cold weather. Relieve the fuel pressure at the fuel rail schrader valve. Then turn the key on for 20 seconds but don't start the car. Then turn the key off and check to see if there is pressure at the schrader valve (I use my finger to push the center) Be careful please. If fuel does not come out Viola there is your problem. To further check if you want, just for @#%%'s and grins, crank it up and as soon as it starts up shut it off and go back to schrader valve. There will now be pressure there. If the relay is not coming on check at the relay. It's under the drivers dead pedal in a 94. Test the relay out of the car just to be sure if it's something else or not. Good luck.
