Most Z28's I have heard w/out cats or gutted cats back fire alot. I think it is more related to the no cats than the 2 on the left. A cat's job is to burn un burned fuel. If not burned it pops or backfires. Correct me if I am wrong.

When your pipes are cold it will "pop" but it is not backfire. More or less "cackle". When the pipes are warm, it sounds good usually.

When the car is cold its in open loop and runs richer then when its warmed up in closed loop. The excessive gas when in open loop causes the backfire.
