The fact that its a 5.7L engine does not mean you should smell "fumes". A well tuned, carefully maintained 5.7L (or any other displacement) LT1, with cat(s) should burn clean and have a neutral exhaust smell. Take off the cat and any car will stink. Have a problem with misfires and/or exhaust leaks, or an exhaust valve that isn't closing fully, and the computer is going to cause it to run pig rich and stink even more. Have you ever checked the lash on the valves?

If it has a Y-pipe, it isn't "full-dual" exhuast. A full dual exhaust would have headers, with a pipe off each of the header collectors, directly to the back of the car on each side (bank), and a muffler (or maybe not a muffler) on each side. Once you use a Y-pipe, you no longer have a dual exhaust.

Yeah I am going to put cats on it and make it a true dual exhaust that's what i wanted to do when i got it but my funds are going to be a little low after i get new tires and paint it and I'm going to check for an open valve tomorrow thank you!

Paint [I]before[I] making sure that it runs correctly?
I can understand having a nice looking car, but if it runs like a dog, isn't it pointless to paint it?

well yeah it runs great now like injuneer said i just needed to drive it for a while hasn't backfired since, the tires are next and then the minor problems with the car needs a new drive side window motor, need to hook the speakers, get the heat working which i think its just the thermostat. Then comes the body work and paint

ok so replacing worked for the most part but when i try to accelerate kind of hard it will backfire it sounds like it is coming out of the right exhaust would this have anything to do with the fact that my left side of the exhaust has a muffler but not the right? Could this backfire have anything to do with my headers?

Putting mufflers on when it already has one would be kind of pointless. It wouldt backfire due to one exhaust pipe going through the muffler. Are you sure its not when you let off the gas and it "cackles" from hard accelaration. You can check for an exhaust leak around the headers.

did you ever find out what was wrong here? i am interested because i have a 94 z28 with stock exhaust cool air intake and larger throttle body that seems to have close the same problem. i seem to be having a bad misfire at low rpms and high rpms but only at full throttle and only under a heavy load it wont misfire when i am not in gear no matter the rpm. i am also seeming to get a tick from the left side of the motor. ive been told that the tick can be an exhaust leak or a lifter not really sure.

also in oct. last year i replaced the water pump opti and fuel pump and radiator plugs and wires about a year before that. i havent replace the coil which was my first thought but not really sure.

I have yet to fix it im thinking that it could be an exhaust leak but i doubt it i think the timing is off on my car or my plugs are getting wet because it is running too rich. My car in low RPM's runs like a v-6 its like the plugs get wet and the spark has to dry out the plug which doesn't happen untill 2800 RPM's our so ill keep you updated i should be getting somewhere tomorrow
