Baby cam talk

I've had a CC305 cam I've been planing on installing for quite awhile now. Lately I've noticed there are a few members of the board running crazy numbers with smaller cams and unported heads. As it stands now my car is no slouch. I've never had it on a dyno but it has made one run down the track with slicks and a good driver (not me). Only one run because it ran 12.97 @106mph on the first try. I figured there was no sense in destroying the clutch or the rear trying to run a 1/10 quicker.

I know people are going to say go bigger, not smaller. But I've got to pass emissions and have a cat. I also vaule stock like drivability and would rather have a sleeper than an abvoiusly fast car that no body will mess with.

Right now I am consittering the Crane 104227 cam. It specs out at 210deg 224deg @ .050 with .479 and .518 lift. I'd also use 1.6RRs for a little more lift.

Any other cam ideas or reasons for or against this are appreciated.

The 305 is going to drive just like stock, so I see no reason for you to go to a smaller cam. It will also easily pass emissions.

That Crane cam sounds like a very good choice for you. Many here will tell you not to go smaller but the guys that have gone "small" have good results to show for it.

CC306 230/244 .510/.540 - .544/.576
CC305 220/230 .510/.510 - .544/.544

Pretty big difference.

I wouldnt go smaller than a Hotcam or CC305. Personally I'd try to find out if the GM 846 passes emissions. 222/230 .509/.528 w/ 1.5's

Re: Baby cam talk

Find a small cam that works good with nitrous, then install a hidden system and you have a sleeper.

Re: Baby cam talk

I would say it depends on if you want it to sound like it has a cam
or if you want it to sound stock. If you want a stock sound, then
the Crane is the choice. If you want it to sound like a cam, then
put in the 305. I would think the 305 idles very much like the hot
cam, which IMO is noticably lopey. I really like the low end torque
of the Crane for daily driving. It's hard to say which is better for
the track. Both have put down good times.

Re: Baby cam talk

Part of the reason I've been consittering this is because I've been watching the RPMs I usually operate at lately. I almost always stay below 5k and seldom go above 4k. I'm thinking it might be smarter to get a cam that works better in the range I like to stay in. I'm also addicted to low end torque. I know I'm going to loose some with the CC 305.

I don't care about how it sounds at idle. I'm trying to avoid the obvious lopey sound of a cam. Partly because I not only have to pass emissions, but Delaware has a sound level check I have to pass as well. I was real close with my current set-up. I know a lopey cam will be louder and probably fail.

I'm sure I would be happy with a CC305, but If I can trade a little top end for some more bottom end. I might like that more.

Re: Baby cam talk

Regardless of the cam you choose, you'll get the best use out of it by dialing in your suspension; and suspension tuning doesn't affect emmissions.
