Autozone opti people come here
Re: Autozone opti people come here
Ok first off thank you twice, and also if thats what i do is it hard to put cap on? What should i do to cap before sand it up some maybe? Also im getting a slight hesitation like timing off at startup maybe from the cheap gas im thinking.
Re: Autozone opti people come here
The optispark comes in two sections:
Sensor- solid metal piece in the back, which contains a metal disk with notches in it, and a sensor on the side of the wheel. When this part goes out the car will 1) not start or 2) run very eratically, or possibly only have wierd problems at upper rpms
Cap & Rotor- Plastic cap with plastic & metal rotor, the actual "spark" travels through here. Problems with this are basically preignition, backfiring, etc. Car runs like junk, especially when you step on it.
If you're looking for a whole new one, I know there's a couple people from dealerships that wholesale them on here, or else summit racing has complete units, 285 for vented, 3 something for unvented?- not quite sure. Most people say go with a whole unit, because a lot of the one half attempts don't work out, although I had my cap & rotor done and the sensor section is still running just fine, but I didn't do mine myself. I would suggest a whole new one.

Re: Autozone opti people come here
I cobbled together a Delco vented cap and rotor kit with an autozone optical portion. I just capped off the vent in the cap.
I installed it myself and has been excellent for 15k.
The optical part of the opti can go bad but usually doesn,t, its the cap and rotor that get fried most of the time.
The cap and rotor are the same basic concept as the old small block chevys, ideally when you did a tune up on the old cars you changed the cap and rotor but its not so easy to do on the LT1 so it does not get done as much as it needs to be.

Re: Autozone opti people come here
FWIW.....I bought the cap and rotor from autozone. It worked decent for 3 1/2 months. It has a warranty of 3 months
. Now I will be giving Jason Crommer a call
. I will never buy another autozone opti piece for $134.00 when I can get a WHOLE new GM one with a 1 YEAR warranty for $200.00 from Jason.

Re: Autozone opti people come here
I agree Jason is excellent. I think there is another guy on here who also can get you the full part for the same or close prive. I can;t remember his name but Jason sold me a opti no problem sense (running on 4 months).

You might want to make it a habit to include a "signature" with the year of your car, trans, major mods, etc. There are two different Optisparks.... vented (95-97) and unvented (93-94).
The cap/rotor can die, the optical sensor craps out in about 25% of the cases, and the cheap bearing in the back housing wears out. It makes sense to replace the complete unit.
