Removal of Head Springs

I bought new springs, and they should be in within a day or two. I have my heads off the car, and want to remove them in preporation for the new springs. In my Haynes book, it says to use a spring compressor, i don't have one of those, any other suggestions? And where do i get one? And how much is it?

You can pick one up at any part store for $30. Also have a magnet handy to remove the valve lock. Look for shoebox site it will show a how-to on valve spring removal.

You can get ghetto ones that work just fine but arent as fancy for $5 from an auto parts store.

Re: Removal of Head Springs

Cheap spring compressors are a major PITA, invest in a good quality and well designed compressor and the job will be easier. I have three. The one I like most is the Moroso Compressor ($60). More Performance also sells a neat one but i haven't used it.

If you don't have a compressor I'll bet you don't have a barrel mic for setting up the new springs. Those go for about $29. Don't just slap new springs in without setting correct and uniform spring heights.
