Assembly lube or heavyweight oil?

Just curious what everyone is doing when camming there stock bottom ends. Are you using assembly lube or just coating everything in heavyweight oil?

Thanks for all input. Have a nice day.

Assembly lube, the heavy oil will run off on a hot day leaving you with mildly oiled bearings for the first start-up.

Another vote for assembly lube here...cant go wrong..carefull not to nick the bearings when you slide it in, and like rich said, goop that cam up real good!

Re: Assembly lube or heavyweight oil?

I agree if this was a fresh shortblock but its not. According to Comps website (that's the cam I've got) it says to only use heavyweight oil on the bearing journals and lube on the lobes. That I also agree with if I were using new lifters but I'm not, I'm reusing my stock ones which are already plenty broke in. Also, since you don't break-in a roller cam the same as a flat tappet I'm not sure I see the need for lube. I'm not trying to cut expenses guys just want to hear everyone's input and good reasoning as to why and these are my reasons for questioning it.

Thanks again for all input.

Just curious what you think happens in your motor when its 90 degrees outside and your cars parked in the sun for 8 hours when your in work? No disrespect just getting you thinking.

Re: Assembly lube or heavyweight oil?

I've used assembly lube on 5 or 6 cam installs now. Each time has gone flawlessly, new builds old builds.. didn't matter.

Why mess with proven success?

The assembly lube we're talking about is different than the moly paste that you use on a flat tappet cam lobe. It is more like a heavyweight lube but it clings and doesn't run off like regular heavy oil.

I use pure molly on everything and then prime it. Would be kind of hard to prime (in car, unless I have not found the secret yet) the LT1's , so, not sure how well the molly alone would protect?

My motor with miles on it already has everything seated and set together.

But start-up is the point where most wear occurs.

I have an old distributor shaft cut down and I use an air powered angle grinder. I pop the inake off , prime it slap the intake back on and start it.

Re: Assembly lube or heavyweight oil?

i used moly paste on the lobes and a mixture of white lithium grease and oil on the journals, it keeps the oil from running off.
