Anyone take their alt. belt off at the track???

I was thinking about doing this to squeeze a few more horses out of the engine. Is this possible? Only thing i see that would be negatively affected would be the power steering and batt charging but what do you need that stuff for at the track anway. How many horses do you think this will free up assuming all pulleys and systems are the same setup as stock. Anyone that has done this please chime in.

It's done all the time. You may get .05 out of it.

have a good battery and hope you dont have to sit in the staging lanes.

remember this can be dangerous if the car does die at the big end. 100mph+ and no power brakes

IMO not worth it

I dont think braking would really be a problem. I mean a top fuel dragster can slow down from 325+mph an f-body should be able to stop as long as u can get the E-brake pulled u should have plenty of time to stop.

Are you crazy? First of all, top fuel dragsters have parachutes. Do you know how much drag is on a parachute? Second, have you ever tried to stop one of these cars from 100+ mph with the engine off and not a long way to stop? Me either because it will probably be the last time you try that. Without a couple of miles to stop, it won't happen. And third, when you push on the brake pedal, 80% pressure is on the front rotors and 20% is on the rear. The e-brake is 100% rear. If you pull the e-brake at 100+ mph what do you think will happen? Back tires lock up spinning out of control. I think i will stick to loosing that measly .05 sec and being able to ride again.

taking it off wont help just amke it worse some ppl think that taking that **** off will give you more horse and reduce track time but the fact of the matter is it wont becuz you need at least 13 volts to get full potenal outa all the electrics out of your car. i could be wrong but i read up on it in books and mags..

If you have a good fully charged bat you can make a couple of passes with out the headlights and still do ok.Just don't want to be starting it to much.Ya kinda have to understand what you are doing and put the belt on between pases and let the bat charge.

The same thing will happen if you had the belt on and it died.

Instead of reading it in books / magazines try it out the track before you make that decision. I have and it does make a differance. I set some of my best 60' times with the belt off.

True but the difference is if you leave the belt off, it WILL eventually die. Having the belt on it COULD happen but not likely

Charging is not an issue for me. They do make portable battery booster packs now you know

Might as well take the seat out while your there?

IMO nothing is as lame as pulling a belt at the track IN A STREET CAR.

You know once the car starts you can pull the battery...easy 40 lbs off the front end....
