why does an lt1 need premium gas?

not high compression and no boost = 87 and no difference in my car

I'm pretty sure the cr is 10.5:1, which puts it in high compression territory. Have you checked with a scan tool to see the difference between 87 and 93 octane?

Why? They are following the US EPA requirements for the addition of oxygenates to gasoline... a dictate that originated with the California Air Resources Board. MTBE was used for about 10 years, requiring the oil companies to make huge capital investments in the construction of MTBE plants. Now the EPA decided that MTBE is hazardous, and they have banned the use of MTBE, making the oil company's investments somewhat worthless. Now the "corn" folks have the EPA's ear and so ethanol is the new wonder "oxygenate of choice".

Check the knock counts and what the timing is doing. Compare with 87 and 93 and see if there is a difference.
