Do you have a Camaro or Firebird?? I think Injuneer did, and I would bet a few others have also. I'd like to, that air bag is ugly, but I think I may need it someday.

In the interest of light weight, I just bought one of the cheapest Grant wheels availble, along with their Pontiac horn button.

Grant steering wheel

I'm thinking it was about 18-20#, when you consider the weight of the Pontiac stock wheel (radio control system) and the airbag.

Please note, my car is not driven on the street.... so lack of airbags isn't an issue.

It has been a while, but from what I remember, I had to use a torx to remove the 4 bolts that held the air bag in place. (the bolts are located in the back of the steering wheel)
I don't remember what size was the main nut, but it was pretty big, and besides that, I had to use a steering wheel puller and a dremel to cut some plastic. I also disabled the airbag light by cutting a BROWN wire on the DERM connector which is located behind the glovebox, to the right. Before working with the air bag and such, I disconnected the battery and let it sit for about 20 minutes.

Do think it would be safer for me to keep the air bag?

I removed mine for weight reduction. I figure the only time I drive the car, I have on a helmet, a fire jacket, I'm wrapped in a 5-point Simpson harness, and I'm surrounded by a chrome moly 6-point roll bar, with SFI padding on it. Somehow, I don't see the airbag adding much in the way of protection. I have also seen a car at the track blow the airbags on a tranny failure. Not something I'd like shoved in my face at 120mph.

But for a street car, you need to think about it carefully.

I will be getting my 8point cage next month, and my 5 point harness. That should make up for the air bag you think?(had to get all this Because I ran a 10.8 ) They booted my off the track.

Is it safer to keep the airbag? I suppose it is, but every time I drive my car I'm glad I got rid of the stock steering wheel.
