Any way to "Fix" the fuel level sending unit?

Mine appears to be shot, I know its just a variable resistor, and a couple wires, is there any way to clean it up and make it work again? I already checked the resistanace on it and it read infinite, meaning open circuit I think, so therefore i determined its prolly a broken wire, or the resistor and the contactor arent touching. Do you think it could be fixed or do I need to spend 50 bucks and a trip to the junk yard.

Thanks
P
