Can I remove key from the crank?

I just realized that my new crank has a key but the LT1 hubs don't. Since I won't be using a supercharger can I just somehow remove the key from the crank and install my hub? Also could I have done any damage to the crank when I was trying to beat the hub on? I did cause the key in the crank to move up somewhat. I don't see anything visible to the crank I just figured that maybe I could have, but hopefully not of damaged the crank.

There should be a front and rear slot on the crank for keys. No key is needed on the front slot. The rear one is needed for the crank gear.
