Any Street Twin owners have trouble with pilot bearings????

I just burnt up my third pilot bearing. Obviously this means that my tranny is spinning off-center. The first time it happened it destroyed the bearings inside the tranny. I got the tranny fully rebuilt after that and the guy told me that the face of the tranny was off about .025" and that it may have caused the bearing to go south. So he has it machined flat (supposedly) and gives me a complete rebuild with carbon syncros and the Viper shift forks. I use a bushing this time when installing it rather than a bearing. Well, this was in June, and 10 months later my car locks into 4th gear. I have a warranty on the tranny so I go take it in. He tells me that my third gear syncro is cashed, and that my pilot bushing looks like it was hollowed out a couple of millmeters. He puts new syncros in for no charge and replaces the bushing with another bearing (the same type that failed on me in the first place). Well, I'm driving it for about a week, and I push in the clutch only to notice that it is not disengaging. If I throw a quick rev while the clutch is in, it will break loose from the motor. So this tells me that the bearing went south again. I just dropped the car off the other day because of this and because it also wouldn't go into fifth. So what I'm asking is could all this trouble be because I have two clutch disks, and they may be forcing the input shaft to spin off-center, or do you think that the guy doing the tranny work is at fault. Or, am I at fault? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Brian

I don't know if it's ST specific.

When I put in my ST, my bearing was COMPLETELY hollowed out, as it, there was nothing but a shell. And this was on the stock clutch/PP/flywheel and stock T-56.

I couldn't tell, the car seemed to drive fine.

Pretty weird, but at least you know it can happen w/o a ST.

Do you downshift a lot? Cause I do. I push in the clutch, throw a rev to match the gear, and then shift the tranny and let the clutch out. Just wondering. Anyone else?

Ah Ha! Maybe thats whats causing all of these things to fail. I have heard of a Moroso Pilot bearing that is supposed to be very strong. I think I'll get one this time. Later,

Brian
