Another Valve Adjustment Q (Running Method)

I adjusted the valves on my car yesterday and everything worked out well. The only problem I had was one or two of the rockers (1.6 RR) wouldn't make noise when loosened. I loosened the rocker and the rpms would go up and I couldn't hear it making noise at all. The whole valve train got loud and I couldn't tell if it was clacking or not. It was loose enough to turn with my fingers (real easily), so I gave it an 1/8th of a turn and tightened it down. Have any of you guys ever had this problem? I didn't know if the lifter wasn't pumping up correctly or maybe I didn't give it time to pump up enough. Also, if the valves are too tight, will I loose vacuum or is that when they're too loose? Thanks guys.

Too tight will cause loss of vacuum and rough running.

Thanks shoebox. They felt like they were too tight, but I didn't get a chance to finish putting the passanger side together before it started raining. Hopefully my vacuum will be back where it is supposed to be at idle.

With the car running, you don't need to listen for anything really. Just loosen the nut a bit, then slowly turn it back in. You will feel the point where it does not want to go any more without signifcant force applied. That is your zero lash.

I read that you loosen until you hear it, then tighten until you don't, and add 1/8th of a turn (comp r lifters). I've read that multiple places. If I did it your way, I'd be afraid that I'd compress the lifter back down and never find zero lash.

Look... if you loosen the nut a few turns and you don't hear anything, it's either a fluke incident or there is something seriously wrong. Since the car seems to run okay apparently, I suggested that you do it by touch instead of by ear. Spin the nut down until you feel resistance. IMO, 1/8 turn is too much for comp r's. I have mine just a hair over zero lash.

I'll redo the valves before I take the car to the track. I'll keep that in mind this time. I might do less than 1/8th turn. I didn't understand why it would loosen, but not make noise. I had it loose enough where I could turn the nut with my fingers. I appreciate everything.

Try taking the nut all the way off and then keeping it loose before you tighten it back down. I've found a few of them are a little harder to turn until you do this

I thought about taking it off before I start the valve adjustment next time. I'll take it off and make sure it is free and put it back on, fire the car up, and adjust it. Maybe I'll get some noise from it then.
