Another Oil Pressure Post...

This isnt the typical oil pressure issue. When I first start my car up I see pressure up to the middle mark on my gauge. Once warmed up I see a little below the first mark on the gauge.. The pressure rises with RPM until ~3K.. then it stays steady.. about halfway between the first and the middle mark on the gauge. Even at WOT (5,000+ rpm) the guage doesnt show anything above that point. Any ideas? I just bought a new oil sending unit.. and I know you can hook a mechanical guage..but I dont think I have one available? It scares me a little.. its a 46K mile engine, and as far as I know the oil system is good.. but this does concern me. I also have the pressure drop under hard braking but I understand thats semi normal??

Thanks

Re: Another Oil Pressure Post...

check for intake manifold leak, i can't think of anything other then that

The mid line is about where it should be, mine shifts between a little below and right on the line, just depending on the temp.

Pressure drop under hard braking is not normal. If the lower pressure is consistent with the drop in rpm, then that would be more normal.

Re: Another Oil Pressure Post...

a friends car, the oil pick up tube fell off, and under hard braking it would loose oil pressure because the hole on the pump would be uncovered. It took us a while to figure it out. I'm not saying thats your problem, but it's a possibbilty.

Its been kinda cold aorund here and when cruising just after start up ive seen as high as 75 PSI according to my gauge! Warm idle is a lil over the quarter mark, and i go halfway between the half and 3/4 mark at higher rpm when warm. Your deffinatly reading low according to what im getting on my gauge.

What oil/filter are you running? Im running 5W30 castrol GTX with a delco filter. If you have an orange fram filter on your car id be looking at that as being the problem.

That sucks.. it was a fram filter.. TG30.. is this my problem?????

Shoe - I was low when that was happening... filled it back up and the braking issue is gone. (it was dipping but not drastically) I didnt realize that had solved the issue until just now.

Id get rid of that fram oil filter ASAP, they are junk and have caused more then a couple motors to blow up. STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING ORANGE!!!! at least as far as filters go, chevy orange is still ok.

Unfortuntely there was nothing of value.. so your saying that it filters the oil better therefore is less restrictive and bad? So thats like saying a stock air filter is crap and you shouldnt run one because the K&N flows better but may allow more crap into my engine since its less restrictive. (right??) I am not even seeing anyone claim their oil pressure was affected by a fram filter..just that someone cut one apart and it had cardboard in it. Im really confused... any hard evidence?? Ill try a different brand out of curiosity and see if my pressure is affected.. if I dont see anything.. then Im not going to join in on the Fram bashing based on essentially nothing.

Re: Another Oil Pressure Post...

I have read many articles about oil filters & the Fram was rated near the worst in burst strength & filtering capacity. The WIX was rated top overall in the last one that I read. If I can find the links I will post them for all to read. I have personally had 2 of them separate & blow oil everywhere & also a friend had one come apart at the seam causing a healthy leak. I quit using FRAM & now use AC due to convenience. Never had a problem with these & they can be bought almost everywhere. The WIX is available at many NAPA stores. Do an internet search on oil filter reports. Hope this helps.

Re: Another Oil Pressure Post...

I use OEM filters and have never had any problem related to them in over 40 years fooling around with cars. Spend the money on something that makes a difference, not on a fancy oil filter.
