Alternator Pigtail Help

Hello,

I have an LT1 out of a '95 Caprice. I bought a new wiring harness from a company that makes them to swap the engine into an older car. I plugged everything in and the engine idles but it doesn't rev at all. When you try to give it gas it dies. I went looking for the problem and noticed that my volt gauge was reading about 10 so I took a look at the alternator and there is no pigtail plugged in. The $500 wiring harness I just bought doesn't include this! I have called them many times and it goes to voice mail and they don't call back. I went down to the parts store and they are ordering me in the right pigtail but I have no idea where the wires go. Any thoughts on how to hook this up?

Re: Alternator Pigtail Help

The "L" terminal goes to a switched 12 volt source. If you want to be "correct" it actually comes from the instrument panel so the "check gages" indicator will work correctly.

The plug is a three wire plug and I just ran one of them to the ignition switch for now and it seems to be working fine.

No, it is a place called lt1wiringharness.com. I checked their website and I couldn't find a phone number so I emailed them and he got back to me on a Saturday and had one harness in stock. I paid to have it overnighted and I was happy with the product especially for the $490 price, but the service is terrible. I have emailed him a few times and called probably four times since Monday and just get a voice mail and never a return call. Good product, terrible service.

You sure you want to refer to it as a "good product" when it's missing an entire connection?

Incidentally Advance Auto has the connections for alternators in stock.

I recently changed from a 105 AMP alternator in my Pick up to a 124 AMP and found the connector there.

Re: Alternator Pigtail Help

I got a message from the guy today saying he had things that held him up but he got all my messages and emails. Anyway, he said the alternator wire is part of their chassis wiring harness and is not included with the engine harness. I guess I can see that the wire for the alternator does go into the interior of the car but don't you need the alternator to run the engine??? It should be included with both harnesses.

The single wire in the connector is part of the F-Body engine harness.
