Alt help
Ok, I need some help figuring this out. When I wired up my LT1 with the painless harness it didn't come with anything to hook up to the alt. I got it all done except for the 4 connector clip. I know that you only need the BAT wire and the L wire connected to make it work. My problem is where do you connect the L wire to? Is it like an old GM SI type alt where the L can hook up with a simple wire to the BAT one? I have parts of the origional harness and the connecter (P L F(I) S) has 2 wires coming from it. The wires are connected to the L and the F terminal. The P is the tach signal, S is true batt voltage, and F is for the computer-sensing terminal. What the heck is the L and where does it go???
Re: Alt help
"L" is used for the dash light on a 4th gen, but after it goes through some solid state circuitry. To make the alternator work, you can connect the "L" terminal to a 12v switched source, but add a 470 ohm resistor inline to step down the voltage. Straight 12v won't work and may harm your alternator.
The book says the "I" terminal may be used in place of the "L" and does not have to be stepped down by a resistor, though I have not heard of anyone doing this (probably because most people have the harness with only a wire coming out of the "L" cavity). Seems it should work, though.
