All My Gauges are off?
All My Gauges are off?
I was just wondering how common it is for the gagues to be off? My temp Gauge is always off, At idle the car temp says its 240-260 degrees but once you get on the gas it drops back down to normal. Then my gas gauge is off by alot, It moves all over the place, $10 worth of gas "fills the tank" then 5 minutes later it drops when im at idle and again moves when im on the gas. But the worst one is my Speed-o, Its 8 moh off. When I tested it with a G-tech, every single run to 60mph read at 52 mph. So i was wondering how often the Gauges are off in Camaros/Firebirds and is there anything i can to get them fixed?
How do you know your coolant temp gauge is "always off"? If you had a problem with the cooling system, it wouldn't be impossible for the temp to climb to 240-260degF, and then drop off when you start moving. When the car is moving, there is more air passing through the radiator, and more coolant circulating through the engine as the RPM comes up. Do you hear both fans running when the temp goes over 240degF?
The coolant temp gauges reads a sensor on the drivers side head. There is another coolant temp sensor on the water pump housing that supplies a signal to the PCM. Put a scanner on the PCM and see if the coolant temp in the PCM agrees with the coolant temp on the dash gauge.
The fuel tank level gauge is sort of messed up in all the LT1's. At "1/4" tank, there is usually only about 1 gallon left. When you fill it, you can get up the 3 gallons in after the gauge hits the "F" mark. At "1/2" there is usually only 5 gallons left. And, the gauge will move up and down as you accellerate, and as you corner, since the float doesn't seem to be damped very well. Your gauge sounds normal.
The last thing I would use to check the speedometer is a g-Tech... the g-Techs aren't very accurate to begin with, and they do not measure vehicle speed directly, but calculate it from the accelleromter readings. To check your speedo, find a highway with "mile markers". Hold the car at exactly 60MPH indicated on the speedo. Measure how many seconds it takes you to go one mile, between mile markers. It should take you exactly 60-seconds. If it isn't 60, but some other value (lets say 58-seconds), divide 3,600 by the number of seconds it took you to cover one mile:
true speed = 3600 / 58 = 62mph
Repeat this several times to get a meaningful result.

well, if u ever changed ur rear end gear ratio it will do that to ur speedo
ur temp gauge is correct i belive... check ur thermo and ur fans, turn on ac... because or engines run hot, at idle, the fans are not enough really to keep the temperature down, and once u get going the wind will blow the heat away but the engine is still quite hot so it'll raise back up as soon as u stop... u can try using some Seafoam, because that will get rid of carbon that will make a build up on the side of the cylinders and get very hot, sometimes hot enough to not allow ur car to turn off
ur gas gauge thats just how it is, when i first got my car i put 2$ in the tank it went from E to 1/4 put about 4$ in its to 1/2
it will stay on Full for a while then it will go down,
because our tanks dont have anyway to keep the gas in one spot (waist of weight) it will fluxuate a considerable amound when u mash on the gas and when u hit the breaks, and when u go up hill it will go up and down hill it'll go down
