Are all LT1 motors the same?

I need to get a replacement motor. Just wondering if all LT1's from Caprice's, Camaro's, Roadmaster's and Fleetwood's are the same? Also would a 96/97 motor run on a 93-95 due to the ODB2?

That'll give you a quick outline.

Let us know what you find specifically and we or I can help you decide. The shortblocks are the same year for year, the OBD1 vs. OBD2 thing is easily overcome. The ignorant here will say the b-body motor is bad but mostly out of ignorance rather than a real understanding of things.

BIG bonus is a b-body motor is likely to be MUCH cheaper than an f-body motor and likely less abused.

I don't think thats true at all. Most B-body Lt1's were in police cars and cabs. Have you seen how cops drive their cars? Of course alot of them were not subject to this abuse but most LT1's you find at the junk yard are out of ex police cars. I myself would not trust a B-body LT1.

Most I have found have actually been Roadmaster or Fleetwood they get overlooked and have been grandpa driven.
The 94-96 wagons all got the LT1 another great way to get an LT1 that was likely lightly driven.

The cop cars are unjustifiably put up on a pedestal and sought after for all the wonderous "cop stuff" including the motor .

I don't have the numbers but I would guess that there were more 94-96 Roady's, Fleetwoods and caprice/roady wagons all built strictly with the LT1 than there were cop cars that were OPTIONED with the LT1, if buying from a Caprice sedan you need to make sure it is an LT1 not an L99 those were the base engine in the civilian and police cars and look identical to an LT1.
There is one rumored case of a factory L99 in something other than a Caprice sedan and it was supposed to be a special ordered Caprice wagon.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find a B body LT1 if I can find one cheaper than an F body LT1. Either one will work for me.

I just want to find something reliable. At the most I will do a cam and head swap. I'm not looking for anything too crazy. I use my car as a daily driver so reliability is the #1 priority for me.
