air pump and egr?

I have a 96 z28 and I want to remove the air pump and egr. How will this effect the motor and what do i need to do to keep the ses light from coming on?

Re: air pump and egr?

It will have no affect on the engine. You will notice no performance gains, other then the small weight loss. AIR only runs for a couple minutes at startup, to help the cats heat up and start working faster. EGR never operates at idle or at WOT. Just when you are running at lower RPM, and lugging the engine. That's a condition that increases combustion chamber temps, increasing NOx formation and promoting detonation (knock). The recycled exhaust gas cools the combustion temperatures.

You can get both diagnostics "programmed out" of the PCM. If they know what they are doing, they can avoid the "system not ready" flag that may cause failure if they hook up to your ALDL connector for emissions. There are also electronic "spoofs" to simulate the presence of the EGR system, but none for the AIR system that I am aware of.

As already noted, there will be no performance gains. Removing the air pump will drastically clean up the engine bay though.
