The car will run fine without it, however you may hav an idiot light and consequently have a problem for inspection.

Nope, dont need it, except by law. Take the pump off, plug off the fitting on the intake, rip off the metal hose that wraps under the engine that goes to both headers, rip off egr valves, and flex hose that goes from passenger header to back of intake, plug off holes in back of intake. there went your whole egr system. if you remove the vacuum solenoid on the side of the intake that goes to the egr valve on back of intake you will get an SES light randomly.

Ediit: It pumps the exhaust gas from the manifolds back into the intake for recirculation, EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), part of that whole system.

if you don't have to do emissions and have a 93-95 or programming for a 96-97 get rid of it. Doing the AIR! mod cleans up the engine bay so much. It also gets rid of that annoying air tube that comes up right by the passenger front spark plug that gets in the way.

Well its suppose help get the cat working so to speak at startup. I dont belive it does much of anything. GM even sent a SB out telling dealers to diable them on some of the Impala SSs.

I kept blowing the damn fuse, so I just pulled the electrical connector from the back of the pump. No more blown fuses, and I don't need to plug anything either. What's the AIR pump weigh in at anyways? Probably <5lbs?

i bet an air pump weighs in at ~5lbs. its purpose however is to add extra air to the exhaust stream before the motor warms up b/c it runs extra rich which can kill the cat... the air leans out the mix so the cat can handle the extra fuel.

Just pull the plug off of the back of the pump. That's really all you need to do. If you look closely you can see it, it's just a normal electrical type plug. Yank it, and let it hang.

You're a bit confused on what the EGR system is, and what the AIR system is. They are not in any way combined (except for some plumbing on the 93's).

The AIR system pumps filtered air from the intake duct to the exhaust manifolds. The black "valves" at the exhaust manifolds are simply check valves to prevent exhaust gasses from flowing out of the manifolds. It works for 3 minutes at startup to help the cats reach operating temperature. Then it shuts off.

EGR uses the valve on the back of the intake to allow exhaust gas to displace air in the cylinders to reduce combustion temperatures and reduce NOx formation.

But they are two seperate syststems with two distinctly different purposes.
