Air Filter Questions (K & N)
Air Filter Questions (K & N)
I have a K/N filter on my 97 and there is a "connector" sticking out of the metal part of the where the air travels to the engine. There is a loose black tube that has suction when the car is running and its in the exact area of this hole.
Whats the tube do? and does it need to be hooked up?

Do you have a K&N filter panel in a stock air box, or a full K&N FIPK (cold air intake kit)? In either case, on the air intake ducting, between the filter and the MAF sensor, there is a 5/8" nipple for the AIR pump air suction tube. Is that the connection you are asking about?
That should be connected to the AIR pump with a rubber hose. If AIR system has been deleted from your car, the nipple should be blocked off with an vacuum cap. If the hole is open, its allows hot, dirty air from the engine compartment to enter your engine.

The AIR pump runs for about 3 minutes on engine startup. It pumps filtered air into the exhaust manifolds. That air combines with (burns) the excess fuel in the exhaust, from the very rich "cold start" A/F mixture, and helps the cat(s) heat up faster. The cats won't work until they reach a very high temperature. After 3 minutes, the pump shuts off and doesn't run again until the next engine start.
