Aftermarket Throttle Body Brands

In my continuing research efforts for my le2 build (1995 z28 m6) I wanted to ask for input about throttle body brands and if anyone has had any experience with them. Just a quick summit search yields for 58 mm:

TrickFlow - 265$
BBK - 329$
Holley - 400$
Summit - 249$
Proffessional Products - 220$
Edelbrock - 315$
NOS - 570$

I am looking for functionality/performance foremost, then price/value, then looks, then lastly brand recognition.

I did a forum search and found that some people seemed to need to modify thier TB to work properly yet some didnt even on the same brand. Id prefer to not have to modify but w/e.

Anyone have a specific brand they prefer or any that offered big problems with your specific builds?

Thanks in advance!

I run the Holley, and its average. Needed a bit of work to make it satisfactory. The NOS is a Holley with added nitrous connections. After tweeks, the Holley was very good. And its easy to make it look good:

The shop that built my engine recommended the Accel-Lingenfelter TB. I've heard good things about the AS&M.

The Edelbrock and the BBK are the same unit.

I've been running an AS&M TB for ~8 years without a problem.

People seem to be all over the place. Are there specific ones to avoid? Any horror stories floating around? If not I would probably settle for the cheapest one.

Also, what am I missing here:

Trickflow and Summit are probably the same, probably goes for Professional Products too. BBK and Edelbrock, also the same if I recall. Holly and NOS same.

I'd say just get the cheapest unless you want some kinda of cosmetic or name brand value. 58mm is 58mm, I know some have to be modified to get everything just right with sensors and linkage.

BBK and Edelbrock are the same ... both names were on my box (52 mm). I don't know who actually makes it. It works and the machining is fine. However the divider between the chokes or "airfoil" that's part of the casting was so distorted as to be impossible to straighten out (the air supply hole for the IAC was completely to one side and just in front of the passenger side throttle plate) so I returned it for another. (I bought mail order, if it had been in person I would NEVER have taken it) The replacement wasn't much better but at least the IAC supply was in the center. It still took a lot of grinding to clean up the roughness and lumps in the divider. The rest of the casting was fine and it seems to work well. Some people have complained of annoying whistling sounds at small throttle opening with after market TBs. Mine doesn't do this, but BBK quality control leaves much to be desired and I won't buy their products anymore.

hmm this is actually the first negative I have heard about a BBK TB. Thanks for the info!

I think I will probably just end up with the Summit Brand.

I use the Summit 52mm and no issues... Have to deburr some of the edges, unless you like the sound of a jet engine..

Power gains would be the reason most people would.
