Aftermarket or stock oil pump driveshaft replacement?
Aftermarket or stock oil pump driveshaft replacement?

My pump shaft recently broke, so I'm going to need another. Should I just get another stock unit or is another stronger replacement I should go with?Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk

Damage like that is pretty much always associated with either a cam with the wrong gear or a HV oil pump.
The only "aftermarket" direct replacement I know of is the Heron Performance billet one but I believe that uses the stock gear it is a billet body.

The one from Herron is just the housing. You will still need a new gear, something is not meshing with the cam gear. You need to find out what kind of cam you have. you may need a different type of oil pump gear

I'm hearing that high oil pressure with a lot of RPM can cause this problem. It has a high pressure spring in it (so I'm told), so I'll make sure and take it back to stock when I take it out.

that exact thing happened to me with my le2 cam and a stock gear. looked exactley the same... had to change out the gear for a compatable gear.

I'll find out by tomorrow what material the gear is on the cam. In the meantime, I found a melonized oil pump drive gear (GM PART # 10456413) on gmpartsdirect.com. Would I just take the gear off the current shaft?
If I use the melonized gear, could I continue to use the high volume oil pump?

Re: Aftermarket or stock oil pump driveshaft replacement?
It's the high VOLUME, not the high PRESSURE that wears the gear. High volume pumps have larger impellers. Larger impellers move more oil and take more power while providing more resistance. The pressure is governed by a pressure relief spring that opens and bypasses oil back into the pan when the springs rated pressure is exceeded.
