aftermarket coil on a 96/97?

well I've been asking couple friends etc, and they are all telling me that there is no coil for a 96/97... (aftermarket that is lol)... they told me the plugs are different... so why not just cut my plug out, and put an older style plug, and use the aftermarket coil... if not why not?
