AFR LT1 head problems?

Anyone else with lt1 AFR's please chime in here...

I am very unhappy with the design of my AFR 190's. It looks like they let a retard run the machines the day mine were made.

1. The AFR guideplates don't line up well AT ALL with the valve/lifter. It took a lot of cutting and welding on the guideplates to make them center on the valves.

2. Some of the holes for the centerbolt valve covers were not drilled deep enough...that took a good bit of time to fix as well.

3. The valve cover lip does not clear the edge of the head in quite a few places. I am concerned that my valve covers will leak terribly until I can grind the seating surface until it sits behind the valve cover lip.

Anyone else had problems like this with their AFR's???

I have heard the only quality work ones are the full race version I have some heads if you want to buy from lloyed elliot I would get your money back send it back bro Im tired of companys trying to screw people over like that. And when you call them tell them nothing just send their stuff back. Oh yea make them pay for the shipping.

Re: AFR LT1 head problems?

I bought my AFR 190 LT1 heads about 1998.
I've had no problems.

At the time, it was a well known fact that AFR didn't make the center bolt valve cover holes as deep as stock -- I simply used shorter bolts.
AFR cautions against making them too deep -- you can hit water.

I bought mine in 99 and I have only experienced the centerbolt hole depth problem. Just like above I used a shorter bolt.

AFR also says that you may have to grind the valve cover seat to get your covers to fit.
I just bought an extra set of valve cover seals and some black RTV and put a double gasket on mine, works gtreat and no leaks.
Every thing lined up on mine.
I have the 190's and I love them !
Hell I even had a set of 180's (For Sale) that work great also, no complants here.

What I thought was strange about the centerbolt thing was that some of them were long enough, while others weren't even close

Thanks for the replies guys...I may check out the double gasket thing before I go to hacking on those expensive things

Re: AFR LT1 head problems?

Ya, the bolt thing is a pain but for the performance gains you get it's worth it

If you do the gasket deal you have to use RTV on both of them.
You seal the 1st one right to the cover and let it dry then seal the 2nd one to the 1st.
You may need some clamps (can get from lowes or HD) to hold the 2nd on on to the 1st while it dries.
