Are Afr 220`s too much for this combo?

I am building a 383 with the eagle forged kit and a big cam long tube headers and will be running a 200 shot.
I am just a little worried that the 220`s will hurt my power down low when I run N/A
What if I run 410`s in the 12 bolt and when I run N/A use 26 inch tires and when I spray run 28`s?

I expect the car will be 430rwhp area and oh ya it is an auto maybe I should run a 4k stall?

Thanks
Dave Jones

The heads are NOT to big. Put a good cam in it,port the intake and make 600+HP
Ya need a head flow of 300CFM+ to make 600 so ya don't have that flow unless ya have had them worked over big time.

not too big at all, if you get the intake setup properly you should be all set to run some rpm and deep gearing to go fast. dont forget suspension all the power in the world is useless without traction.

220's on a 383 with a 305 comp cam? I'd say they are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too big. I'm sure the head manufacturer has told you this too but what do I know. Say bye bye to your power below 4500.

I don't think he'll reuse the cc305 with the new combo, he mentioned he's going with a big cam.

Re: Are Afr 220`s too much for this combo?

A friend of mine called AFR to get the 220's, he had a 383 with a T-trim and AFR told him that the 220's were too big for his application, he really wanted the 220's but AFR ended up convincing him they were too big for his 383 even with a blower so he went with one of thier smaller heads. I don't personnaly know enough about airflow to tell you why, but I would think AFR knows what going on in the intake runners, why don't you call them and ask them.

correct I want the cam that will generate the most power as possible.I dont care about emissions and the car will rarely be driven on the street.
I am considering the 210`s now

well i guess i should tell all the fast local guys, that the 220-230cc heads on thier 355's and 383's are way too big then, afr says so. last time i checked afr didn't build engines, which to me basicly means imho thier opinion is worth what you pay for it...

The people who put on big heads and cry about no bottom end probably do not have thier car setup properly. If you run a radical cam, head and intake package your car needs to be setup accordingly. but even a race engine which is designed for power in the 5000-8000 rpm range will destroy a stock engine on the low end, add in needed gearing and the engine can produce less low speed tq and still feel stronger because the thrust is still greater after gearing does its job.

also note the cam for a 195cc head is going to be different than a 220cc head for the same desired rpm range, if you dont know what the differences should be, seek professional help from somebody who does.

I will be getting a custom grind to match the heads forsure.

I wish it were that simple. What intake/carburation are these guys running. How much compression...what gas they use...what rpm do they shift at?

A guy running a solid roller with 13.5:1 that shifts @ 7800 rpm is hardly in the same shoes as this guy.

About no bottom end...sure, every guy with a 5000+ stall convertor loves how they feel down low....the slippage and the fact since you built a drag race engine for the street you now need to throw 4.56 gears at it (or more).

An AFR 220 head is a lot of head for a streetable setup. You will need to throw compression, cubes, cam and aggressive tuning at it...and even then you will still need to address ignition, fuel, exhaust...then you have drivetrain...suspension....

Nah it's not to much IMHO.... maybe since it's a AFR but it really is all about the combination. Ain't like WS6T3RROR has never seen the inside of a engine either, he's got a hella better grasp on this than 99% of the guys here.

Good choice if ya get the comp port package. Don't expect them to flow 297 when ya get them but they will work OK. Ya need to have one port flowed to get the custom cam as the advertised number's are inflated.

Yea they will work but Geezie Petes Bret, 220's on a daily driven 383? It's way overkill IMHO. Wouldn't you agree that a 200 or 210 at the most would be better all around?

Re: Are Afr 220`s too much for this combo?

All depends on how well the port was done. I've had some really driveable setups with 215cc heads on a "big" 350 (358 etc)

Some of it depends on the RPM range of the motor. Usually something you are going to twist higher needs a bigger port. I wouldn't be scared of a 220cc port on a 383 at all, just depends on the application. I'm finishing up a 396 with a 213cc head on it, but it's designed to peak HP at 6200-6300rpm.
