advice please..97 firebird over heated and won't run

A buddy of mine has a 97 firebird LT1 and he got it really hot. He told me that it had the gauge pegged. He said the engine died when he came to a stop on the side of the road. I went to go look at it for him but seen the top hose was blown so he had it hauled back to my place. Now it won't even start. It sounds like it doesn't have any compression. It seems to spin over kinda fast but just a while ago I went out and it acts like it wants to start but just won't quite do it. If I didn't even know that it got over heated I would guess the timing chain broke. I know when a chain breaks it will bend the valves and have no compression but it is just odd it would happen the same time it got hot. Could it be that it got so damn hot it damaged the rings?

worst case heads are warped and who knows what else. Check plugs and compression.
