Loose is better.
I go a 1/4 on mine but the lifter manufacture normally has a recommendation.

Like I said, I personally go 1/4 turn.

You obviously have chosen to adjust them with the engine running, so ideally you would loosen each one until it clatters and slowly tighen until they quite down. Could be anywhere between 1/8 and 1 full turn. Usually around 1/2, but could be a little more or less. I would guess that they would be pretty much the same. I would feel comfortable if they wound up being 1/2.

I don't know how much power you lose by going from 1/4 to 1/2 , but I would guess it isn't so much that I would take the chance of being too loose, especially if you have SA RRs, since if the roller comes of the valve stem, you run into problems.JMHO

You might want to let people know what lifters you are running, so you can get more accurate advice.

I use a vacuum gauge.
loosen them up till they clatter then tighten them down. when your vacuum Rises then falls bring it up to the highest number.
you usually gain about 3-5 in vacuum in your intake.
low tech but very effective

something i found out this week , your oil pressure will play a role in it also. higher oil pressure, from a hv or high pressure pump or tight bearing clearance, you will tend to go 16th to a 8th of a turn. i had mine at half to slightly more and the valves were staying open from 4200rpm. a nice big lean spot on the wide band. adjusted the valves and the car got rich. then the tire popped before we could finish the tune.
