About Weld Pro Star Skinnies???

ok im tryin to get these ordered up here and im wondering if i should just find the tires locally?? i noticed that some people said they just purchased their tires locally... if so what size tires would i ask for? i going with the 15x3.50 wheels (of course ) & it says to use the 26x7.50 tires... but i know usually when tires shopping they use the 275/40/17 as a way to judge size etc. so what size would it be for these wheels then???

also should i get the 1/4" spacer or the 5/16" one??

thnx

I went with the Centerline Telstars, no spacer was required and I bought my front skinnies locally. I bought Volkswagen steel radail 165R15 tires for $85 for both out the door.

I use the weld pro star as well and had to use 5/16 spacer, with 165r15 volkswagen tire. I got them from pep boys for $25 each. There is a photo in my web page if you want to see the skinnies on the TA.

Yes your going to need the 5/16 spacer the rim you are talking about is 15x3.5 1.75BS(back spacing). As for a standard tire size compare to the 165r15 I dont know. 165r15 is a tall and narrow tire.

The problem with the Welds on the front is not caused by the backspace.

It is caused by the shape of the center disc (the part that bolts to the hub), and the way it "rolls" over to become the rim. The center disc shape is such that it catches on the spring clips that hold the brake pads in the calipers. Then, the big horizontal bar on the steering knuckle, the part that holds the calipers and the pads, digs into the "radius" where the center disc rolls over to become the rim. Backspace plays no part in the problem.

You have to think in terms of the way Weld makes the Pro-Stars (and the Draglites)..... they make a front 1/2, that consists of the center disc, and the outer 1/2 of the rim. Then they make a back 1/2, that is made exactly the same way... center disc and the back 1/2 of the rim. Then they put the two 1/2's together, welding the seam at the rim, and leaving the front and back discs loose, with a 1" aluminum spacr between them. The "extra long shank mag style" lugs sandwich the front and rear center discs, along with the aluminum spacer between them, and hold the whol mass tight against the hub.

Hard to explain, but that's the problem. Its even the same for Welds on the rear wheels. The part that interferes is the "radius".... same point that catches on the big horizontal bar in the front, but in the back it rubs on the brake caliper fins. Grinding the fins solves the problem. But again, changing the BS in the back would not change the interference.

I have the Weld prostars as well. Went with the 165R16 Futura Metric Radial from Pep Boys. My Pep Boy guy wasn't very good with the computer mostly because I didn't know what car to tell him the tires were for. He let me wander the racks until I found them myself. 25.00 a piece, mounted, balanced tax and title for about 75.00.
