A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
hey guys i went on vacation for a week....so my car sat for a week...and when i got home i took it out....i saw that after a few miles when i was in drive idling the rpm gauge would drop to about .5 rpms which usually dosent happen to often and also the care with shake abnormally....then i also found out when i gave her a lil gas i would accel to about 4000 rpms and it would sorta stall their and not shift up.....it felt like it was hesitating to shift....i am getting the fluids flushed soon and im gonna put dry gas in cuz maybe the fuel has just been sittin in the car too long.....but this has never happened to me before...
help pleaseeeeeee
help pleaseeeeeee
Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
yeah man sounds like your trans is sliping my tranny went out on my 94 z28 and it did the same thing..flush the tranny fuild first put in some mobile 1 trans oil synthetic oil...if it dont make a different its your tranny starting to go i hate to break it to you
Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
This could be a lot of things and I would least suspect the transmission.
Your engine is obviously not running correctly and this can and will affect how the transmission shifts. Case in point for me was a faulty throttle positioning sensor reading; the transmission would not shift at the proper time because the PCM (power control module = computer) was seeing the wrong information. Your transmission is controlled by your PCM / ECM and if some sensor that updates the PCM isn't getting the right data the wrong things will happen.
You need to scan for codes. Transmission codes will show up but if there are other codes regarding the engine, they could cause the transmission codes. Rule of thumb is to first fix what's causing the engine to idle slow / rough.

Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
thanks but how do u do that? do u have to bring it to the dealership or could a good local garage do it for me? i am going monday like i said to get my windows tinted and fluids flushed.....i will ask him to take a look at it then too.....
Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
If whoever is doing the window tinting doesn't do in depth mechanical service then you should call around to find someone who can scan your OBDI computer. Ask for a diagnostic price and be prepared to say "no thanks". The trick is to find someone who is willing to give you a fair price for diagnostics and then wait for you to let them do the labor. Way too many garages bait and trap poor souls. I have had a garage tear one of my cars down AFTER I specifically told them to not start work on the car. It wouldn't have been so bad but they absolutely butchered the car inside and out. My story is too long but be very careful if you are going to have someone "check" the car out. If possible, take a witness and clearly tell the people that you want to have a diagnostic only and repeat it again. Then you will take it from there.
BTW, although some have bad experiences with dealerships, generally you pay more but don't get borked any more than what you are told up front. There's more to be said about the quality of the mechanics at a dealership versus junior samples' garage but generalizing unfairly steps on too many toes. Good luck and if you tell us how you make out it will help all of us....

Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
yea well the guy im gettin my window tint done...i have gone to before...hes a good guy and a few of my buddies go to him too....im gonna have him flush the fluids...i think my tranny fluid is old and sorta low neways.....i think that could be the reason, and nuttin to do with the computer......wat do u think? is it possible just low fluid could cause this?
Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
Changing the fluid can't hurt but that won't fix a low, rough idle. If your ATF is very low then your transmission will not perform correctly. It will slip and shift incorrectly. However, if it has gotten low enough to do what you describe then it will have over heated and that is bad news for the transmission. Pull the transmission fluid level stick up and out. It will be the stick with the red ring handle toward the back of the motor. Smell the fluid it brings up; if it has a VERY pungent burnt smell you have a cooked transmission and at the very least, the life of that transmission will be shorter even though new fluid may seem to make it better.
BTW, I'm not telling you that something is wrong with your computer; I'm saying that you might have other problems with the engine itself. The sensors tell the computer what your engine is experiencing. Sensors themselves can go bad and report the wrong data or you may have a poor or broken connection to them. There's a great number of things that can cause your engine to run poorly. If you can't get more than 4000 RPM from your engine then I still think you have another problem. I hope you get good news though.

Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
Like most have said, get the trans fluid and filter changed. Ask whoever does it to check the filter for material and it could be a hint to how your trans is doing.
Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
you can get your ecm scanned for free by autozone. if you dont have an SES light you wont get codes. start with the cheapest first and go from there. it'll take 1200 to fix/replace the tranny...why start there?
also, i had this problem too...it was my torque converter failing. so you can't just take someone's advice when someone says "it's not this...it's that because it happened to me". so, do some research, and difinitely fix whatever is causing the engine problem. well, fix them all...

Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
yea i took it to the super chevy show today and on the way up it was acting up agian.....but on the way back it didn't idle as low and it shifted much better and smoother (no hesitation) also it didn't struggle to accelerate in gear like it was doing before.....im gonna start with a fluid flush and work my way from there....im sure it is fine....she has always ran good for me....the only problem i've ever had was a blown head gasket....
Re: A4 being strange....transmission trouble, help please
I guess your not understanding what we are trying to tell you, first go get your computer scanned, while they are doing that have them check the throttle postion sensore...if they dont know how then quickly tell them to get out of your car and take somewhere that does
