97 z28 - Problems with throwout bearing? help please!

Hey, i was looking at buying a 97 z28.....When i was driving it, and i gave it some gas at low rpms (noticed in third and fourth gear, most likely occurs in all gears), there was a strange noise, almost like a rattling.... Didnt sound particularly bad, and there was no change in ride or performance.... Anyway, i asked the guy, he said he's had that noise since he got the car, and it got worse when he put a new clutch in, and that it was just the throwout bearing vibrating under certain loads.... has anyone ever heard of a problem like this??

This is normal. I've had my 96 w/ 6 spd since new and it's always done it. The T56 has to be the noisiest transmission on earth.

A stock T56 can handle well over 500rwhp, and it is a bit of a noisy transmission. Just add headers, cam, exhaust etc.. and eventually you wont even notice the noise from the trans

this happens on my car if I let it get below about 1400 RPM in any gear except first...I think its load on the engine causing it to ping a bit, so I try to avoid it.

i'd worry if it didn't make the noise too. my tranny had a little relieft from "the grind" when i did the pilot bearing/throwout bearing when i had the clutch done. still made the noise after the swap, though.

here's a related post:

I'm not sure about the source of the noise you describe, but as you've heard these tranny's are noisey. I wanted to add that if you install a poly tranny mount (like I did) the the normal noise of the T56 will become more pronounced. Does this car have a poly tranny mount?

Could it be more pronounced on the M29 'Viper spec' T56's since they have hardened gears? . I would think the hardened metal would cause it to make more noise. Just a thought.
