No power to the "switched" components, AND no power to the direct wired (not dependent on the ignition switch) components, absolutely nothing?

Re: 97 Z28 hot battery no power

Sounds like a severe short somewhere. I suspect the alternator since that is not switched, but it could be anywhere. This could be a good use of a thermal (IR) sensing meter to track down the hot spot.

I would wiggle the battery cables with your hand and see if there is any response.(with the ignition on and at night of course so you can see the interior lights come on,or have somebody sit in the drivers seat monitoring the dash and interior lights while you are moving the cables around).Hope this helps.Like Shoebox said it may be a short.My02.Have you had any work done on the car recently?

I'm on a roll now.I forgot to mention on of the easiest things to do is clean the terminal ends with a wire brush or sand paper.Disconnect the negative post first ,then the positive side.Sometimes these get corroded. Then connect the pos, then the neg. and see if this helps.(Do the screws to)My 02.

Actually, Shoebox said to check the cable connections.... e.g. - for corrosion, etc. Gary said it might be a short.

It sounds to me like a bad short in your wiring, or an internal short in the battery. If the battery is hot, unhook the cables and see if it cools off. If not, get a new battery. Either way, unhook it until you track it down.

Agree with ZZ - disconnect it. Several years ago I Had a sealed battery in my Sportster do the same thing after a 1 hour trickle charge, after sitting in the garage for the last few winter months. Mine was so hot I had to wear heavy gloves to remove it from the bike. It took several hours to finally cool.
