96camaro w/lt1 bogging but no ses codes
My 96 camaro was idling low and cutting off in reverse especially when the ac was on. The ses light was on so my husand hooked it to the scanner and it said the idle air control was bad. we replaced it and cleaned the connection and it ran fine. A week later the car started bogging down and losing power. It is not intermitent but it seems that something is causing it to cycle. It will bog down for a couple seconds, run fine for a couple seconds then bog down again. AT the same time the transmission usually shifts very sharp and crisp but is now sluggish. THe transmisson is new and still under warranty. We don't think it is a trans problem. There are no ses codes. My husband is a mechanic but is stumped on this one. We live in the mountains and can't find a garage willing to touch it. We are also leary about taking it to a dealer. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: 96camaro w/lt1 bogging but no ses codes
What code(s) in OBD-II tells you the IAC is faulty? There are codes for high and low idle RPM, but there is no feedback to the PCM for the condition of the IAC motor.
Did you clean the IAC passages in the throttle body?

yes it was cleaned. replaced the IAC at the same time and the car ran fine. This problem stated about a week after. Now the ses light is not on and no codes.

How many miles on the car? If no codes, could possibly be the fuel pump. Check your pressure. If it's not the fuel pump, the opti (distributor) could be starting to go.

low for age. Just under 68,000. My husband has already thought about checking the fuel pressure. Also called around to shops but no one wants to touch the car especially if no ses codes. They basically deal with "stock" cars. Checked with performance shops around here and they mostly deal with installs and older cars, no computers. We were told to check the TPS but figured if something wrong with it, it would send an ses code. We are going to check/clean all sensor connections. Any way to check the opti?

Check the fuel pressure first, and go from there. If the pressure's fine, I'd keep driving it until it throws a code -- I'd almost bet on the fuel pump, though.
There's really no way to "check" the opti if it's not throwing codes (that I'm aware of, anyway) without actually pulling it off and visually inspecting it.
Have your husband check the pressure and post back. That should narrow it down a bit.
Here's a good write-up on testing basically the entire fuel system, courtesy of shoebox

Injectors may need cleaned or replaced. That happened to the 95 v6 I used to own. It was bogging real bad. Had the injectors cleaned and it never happened again.
Sensors will cause your problem also. My car (95 Z28) has the TPS Sensor going out right now and sometimes, especialy when backing up a hill, it will bog really bad, then just take off...
Good luck with it, I hope you get it fixed soon.

Finally gave up and took it the stutzman's Chevelot. Talk about getting screwed...They looked at it for 1 1/2hrs, charged me about $100 and told me nothing was wrong. I asked them if they drove it. they said no but they put it on the lift and took it to 2000 rpms. The mechanic never saw the problem although it is a constint! The dealer we bought it from is willing to pay to have it fixwd so thats a plus. After calling around I have an appointment Thurs w/ a shop that specializes isn transmissions but the owner and one of the mechanics are avid Camaro lovers who have built many. If they can't diagnose they aren't going to charge. I guess we'll see. WIll let you know. Thanks for helping!
