Re: 96 z28 no start

The oil pickup is dead center, directly under the centerline of the crankshaft. The spec for the clearance is 5/16" to 3/8" between the low point of the pickup and the bottom of the pan.

Re: 96 z28 no start

It started today, and the cone of the starter is in the oil pan so I have to drop the oil pan and take it out, I also have no clutch it wouldn't move at all.

Re: 96 z28 no start

The nose of the starter would fall down to the bottom of the bell housing. Take the dust cover off. No way it could be in the engine oil pan.

Re: 96 z28 no start

Why did you disconnect the knock sensor?

Were the pieces of the starter jamming the clutch?

Yes they were jamming the clutch. I'm try to pull the transmission back to look at my clutch and determine if I should get a new one

Re: 96 z28 no start

Does this mean you were able to start it after replacing the starter? Does it start at the turn of the key? Does it idle smoothly and at a steady speed?

You're driving along (part throttle, full throttle??) and the tach reaches 3,000 RPM. EXACTLY what happens? Engine starts to misfire and stumble? Engine just shuts down?

When you tested the fuel pressure did you test it under load, out on the highway? Or just at idle?

Re: 96 z28 no start

Starts every I'm after replacing the starter. It doesn't idle smooth at all, but it was better then when It first started. Full and part throttle it jus doesn't have any pick up. And it jus starts to die out, and won't go over 15 mph. I only tested it at idle.

Re: 96 z28 no start

A worn engine can be 10-20 psi at idle, engine hot. The "Check Gages" light will come on at 6 psi. A new engine will run 30-35 psi.
