Question 96 Z28 low coolant light

Hi All,
I am brand new to the board and I have a question. I have a 96 Z28 that I use as my daily driver. It has 94000 miles on it, and it just this week turned on the low coolant light on the dash. When i check the coolant it is full but the light keeps coming on ever now and then. If I turn the car car off and then restart it will stay out for a while and then come back onever now and then.
I guess my question is do you think the low coolant senser cood be bad or maybe have a bad conection? I have heard alot about water pumps going out and taking the optispark with it and I am tring to prevent this if that might the problem. As you can see I mostly deal with the older cars and am just lost when it comes to the late model stuff.
Thanks in advance,
Nick

probably the low coolant sensor, its about a few inches below the radiator cap, its square. My light is on as well, i just bought a sensor for $25. you could always unplug it and it'll take care of the light. so you can replace it or unplug it. I myself rather replace it.

Terran2k,
Thanks for the info. Is that senser a dealer only item or can I buy it at an Autozone or Checker auto etc...? Also if I unplug it untill I can get it replaced will it set a code in the computer?
Thanks Again for the help,
Nick

I don't think it will set off a code, and I am pretty sure you can get it at some regular parts stores, like carparts.com or something. Mine has been on for a while, but I am probably going to just unplug it.

Notstock4long,
Thanks for the recomendation on carparts.com. They do list the senser for 8.05. Do you or anyone else know if it is a common part to go bad? Also at what temp should the cooling fan turn on?
Thanks Again,
Nick

Hey man I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM, and mine HAS GOT TO BE a bad sensor, I ALWAYS check fluid levels and they never go anywhere on my car.
I have heard that if you unplug it, you can just clean it?? or something someone mentioned Lime Away or something and it cleans it up, I think they just get really gunky??

Hey, nope the sensor wont set off a code. if you unplug it, the light will go off and thats about it. the part # is 1009-6163 ( well thats for my 97) the one on carparts.com for $8.05. I am not sure if thats the correct one. I bought mine from Jason Cromer (877-726-8295) their website is www.samtaylor.com. I paid $25 for it. Just tell him you need the low coolant sensor for your 96 camaro and he'll give you what you need.

Landonsz28,
Thanks for the tip. I will try and clean and see what happens.

Terran2k,
Thanks for the part #, I think I will shop around locally and if I cant find it I will call Jason. I assume its pretty easy to change out, Any Thoughts?
Also, is there a way to lower the shift point. My car will not shift below 6k, weither I shift manually or just leave in drive when I am in it hard. The motor really fells like it stops pulling around 5500 rpm, and I think I could shave a couple of 10ths off the ets by getting it to shift a little sooner.
Thanks Again,
Nick
