Hi all! New guy here. Just bought a 96 z28 for a steal. so I figured any repairs needed would be worth it. So the issue is, a LOUD and absolutely no power, thick smell of gas all around and in cabin aswell. I'm thinking coil pack plugs and wires are needed. Could it be more? Thrown rod or something of that nature? It also shakes terribly at idle. Taking it to a shop next week but some closure before then would be great! UPDATE: threw codes for egr fault, crankshaft position sensor,maf and heater condition. Plus the ****ing knock... New engine or fix this one?

 

do you have any lights on in the dash ?? can you scan for codes ?? there is a sticky on here for free scan
Without hearing your car and what your describing to me it sounds like the car
needs plugs wires ... could be alot more.. Is the car leaking any gas on top of the intake??
its possible that the knocking noise is spark knock the shaking at idle indicates a miss fire or
a fuel pressure problem
no expert here just a student .... The dealership quoted me a $1700 price tag to replace
plugs , wires , opti I.C.M

 

Cel is on but I don't have a scanner or cord so that's not possible right now, may go to auto zone though and get the free scan. I do think there is some gas leaking from the intake but I'm not sure, I'm going to check it today. I'm pretty sure that it is spark knock because it only happens during mid to heavy load. I can get plugs and wires and do that myself no way I'm forking out that much cash. The pain of changing lt1 plugs is worth the money saved IMO.

 

You can get a cheap OBD-2 scanner for less than $25. In the long run, that will be a lot cheaper than playing parts replacement roulette. Before driving it, check the oil for gasoline dilution.

 

Uploading a video now, it's a constant knock.... Not what I thought last night . Smoke coming from the right side where the knock is after it's heated up. May just swap a new lt1 in it if it's bad. Ill post the link when vid is up. Thank you for the help so far

Only 106k miles on this baby and found a oil leak to...going to autozone down the street in a bit for a free diagnostics test so I'll come back with some codes. May have to get some of the cheap mechanics here in arizona to do a swap. My buddy knows a guy who swaped a 04 gt engine and tranny into his 97 gt for 800 bucks and it runs great after 2 years
