96 ss vs z28 - what makes the ss have more power?
Re: 96 ss vs z28 - what makes the ss have more power?
Maybe the SS package alone is similar to the z28. Maybe you only get 1 percent extra with the hood, maybe you dont take the tires into account for much. But you got 2 tenths with that alone. You are crazy if you think adding the OPTIONAL PERFORMANCE EXHAUST, that is not a part of the SS package like some think, or that the level 2 belstein performance suspension doesnt make a big difference, or that the torsion rear axle doesnt make the ss handle curves much better or that you cant tell the difference off the line from 0 to 60, if that is still similar cars and track times that will not make much difference, then i cant help you on here. The 2 cars are not similar, and head to head against the factory 96 z28, and mine is factory 96 ss you wont beat that SS. You pick any track, im not saying some specific type of racing, im saying all around a factory z28 is not similar or close to the same as this SS the same year. Yall should know that this is true with upgrades someone would pay thousands on to upgrade a z28. Yall think they do it for nothing?

I get it. You are proud of your car. There are not many people sitting around debating the stock to stock differences of an SS to a non-SS. After 24 years, most people have moved on with their own mods pushing them way past stock SS levels and this debate would not matter to them.

I guess because we don’t agree with you…. we must may be crazy 🤪 . That’s what we get for wasting 20+ years owning and driving our lowly Z28’s, Formulas, and T/As….. and helping others enjoy theirs.

well if you where one to own one with all SLP options you drive it and be Abel to leave it just as it came from SLP cause those 96 SLP Camaros rip I do have one with 33k on it and I would take it over these new cars today with all the computer bs spend 60 grand on a car and don’t even get a real driving experience. I had both 2002 ss and now a 96 ss SLP I don’t know what they did but my 96 LT1 would beat my 2002 ss so much stronger
Re: 96 ss vs z28 - what makes the ss have more power?
So i currently have a 1996 hardtop White SS 6 speed with 56k original miles and it's my 3rd different LT1 SS. I've also had 2x LT1 firebirds and my little brother had a 1996 z28. There is not much difference at all on the LT1 SS cars as opposed to the LT1 firebirds and z28s. Now from the looks, obviously the SS hood and wing set it apart from a stock z28, but there is absolutely no performance difference really from a 96 z28/formula to a 96 SS/WS6. Sure the SLP exhaust might add a little extra HP but as Fred and Shoebox stated, the intake on the SS is far from ideal as a true WS6 ram-air functions. Nothing about the 96-97 SS or WS6 cars are "race" oriented, Sure the suspension on a level 2 bilstein does ok but it's not leaps and bounds better than the z28. If you are wanting to see the difference in stock to "race" then take a c5 to c5z06 into comparison. I had a 2003 z06 and the FRC style along with horsepower difference and brakes/suspension did feel more race oriented as opposed to a normal hatch c5.
