96 ss stumble

Hello I’m new member and I have an issue with my ss. I have a 96 ss with 58k with a Stumble/hesitation at a light steady throttle like cruising in 4 gear around town. Anything under 2000 rpm. Runs great wide open throttle. I had the opti checked and it was fine. I had a new cap rotor water pump spark plugs and wires replaced. My Mechanic thinks car has a cam due to a choppy idle. When I bought the car I assumed it had a vacuum leak but none found. Fuel pressure regulator not leaking and no DTCs Any ideas would be great thanks

Re: 96 ss stumble

Just asked about the trans type to rule out converter lock/unlock issues. The complaint is typical of cam surge with the M6, even with small cams. It takes an experienced tuner to minimize the effects. Not sure that we have many people left here any more that have that kind of knowledge/experience.

Hopefully someone with more tuning experience can suggest a “fix”. Unfortunately LT1 tuners are getting harder to find.

If you wanted to run a data log of the PCM while driving under the conditions that seem to cause the surge, I could take a look at it to see if there are signs of anything indicating it’s something other than the cam causing the issue. A member here (GaryDoug) has written OBD-2 scanning software, available as a free download. If you wanted to try it, I'll take a look at a .cvs format data log of the scan. The OBD-2 software doesn’t seem to be used much, so you may have install/setup questions, that he will respond to in a timely manner. The OBD-1 version is used a lot, and is an excellent tool.

Thanks for all the info. Do you think it’s worth replacing the front O2 sensors? No code but I had someone tell me to try it and it could help.

I'm not a big fan of playing “parts replacement roulette”.

Re: 96 ss stumble

OP

You really need to do data log as suggested before throwing $ at parts that so far have not resolved your issue

It would also be helpful to anyone trying to help you if you knew what components are in/on the motor, if not stock, and if the motor was tuned for those items. Otherwise its a complete crap shoot.
