96 LT1 crate motor

can anyone help me i have a ? i just purchased a 96 LT1 crate motor. on the timing chain cover theres a hole where the crankshaft sensor goes, when the sensor wasn't there i put my finger there and theres something that feels round on there and it moves back and fourth.when i put the sensor there and i started the engine i hear a rattling sound, im wondering what is that thing or why is it doing that

There a reluctor gear, that the sensor reads. Its sandwiched between the damper hub and the face of the crank timing sprocket. Sounds like the damper hub may not be on the crank all the way, or its too short.

+1....sounds like you re-used you're 94 hub, and you need the 96/97 hub....check ebay, they've been going for about $50+ shipping all day long....

The early hub is longer-not shorter, so it would not cause it to not reach the reluctor. It just sounds like the hub is not fully seated, like Injuneer said.

thank u injuneer for the diagram.now i learned wat goes in there so the only thing i gotta do is make sure that the hub is all the way in.
