95z problem

the service engine soon light is on. the car surges/misses kind of like if you were on a low tank of gas. it will also stall/die sometimes when at a stop. I've already checked the intake tubing and maf for any leaks. The tranny is to be replaced this weekend but I've been running a bad tranny with only 1st and 2nd gear for about a month just cruising through town to work. I'm thinking maybe by using only 1st and 2nd gear maybe I've killed the o2 sensors. Gonna replace the fuel filter this weekend, put in a stage 3 trans, a 3500 stall yank converter, 75hp shot nx kit. What else might be the problem and how can I check . car has an acell ignition, k&n filter, exhaust cutout, 104 spark plugs, perf chip, new 8.5mm wires, headers, lt4 knock module, 160 thermostat.. I'd like to get the car running in perfect order before I use the nitrous. thanks in advance for replies.

You can get your car scanned for codes at some AutoZone stores and at most repair shops. They should be able to tell you what code your car is throwing and how to fix it. I had a similar problem a while back and it turned out to be a combination of things. First I had to replace my O2 sensors, they were all fouled out. Then I had to have my cooling system flushed and thermostat replaced because the car wasnt warming up right and the car wouldnt go into closed-loop mode and take readings from the sensors, which made it run way too rich. Then I also found out my Opti is going bad. I havent replaced that yet but the other two things helped out alot. Hope that helps ya out.

Well, my autozone doesn't do the scanning anymore so I went and bought a scanner. the auto xray. gonna pull up the codes tonight. Scanner was on sale for $200. Its called a prokit and comes with cables to connect to obd1, obd2, crysler, ford, imports, blah, blah, blah. hope its worth the money.

Fuel filter... It is either fuel, ignition, or sensor/actuators. Does that help? Anyways, once you can read the code, post it and we'll go from there. Surging under load sound like fuel delivery / fuel filter issues.

alright, scanned the car and got a couple of codes. the first prob was the sec. air system. traced it down to a fuse under the hood. replaced the fuse and I don't get the sputtering problem problem anymore. the second code was an 89 which is maf system failure. so i went out and bought a granettelli maf and put it in. still get the code. cleared the code and it shoots right back on. checked the voltage to the maf and its a constant 13. anyway to check the maf itself to see if maybe its a defective unit? what else could be the problem?

MAF code is a 48. Where are you getting 89? I can't even find an 89.

OK, AFTER READING THE MANUAL, THE IAC IS IN THE THROTTLE BODY AND CONTROLS IDLE. ARE WE ON THE SAME PAGE? AM I SUPPOSE TO BE CHECKING THE IAT INSTEAD? I'LL CLEAN THE IAC BUT I DON'T THINK THATS THE PROBLEM.

Not sure about the error code, but the SES light on my 95 wouldn't go away(under similar circumstances) until my air pump was changed. Its a factory recall on the 95's so you could get it done at the dealer for free.
