95 Z won't start unless jumped
95 Z won't start unless jumped
95 z28, battery holds 12V plus and the starter has 12v+ but the solenoid isnt getting the power. I cant get an accurate reading but im pretty sure i saw only like 3 volts. what could be causing this. could the wires be corroded and im not seeing it? how do you test the ignition switch?
car will start after a minute of jumping from another car and will start after the battery has charged a while but it is always holding over 12Volts, its like the little extra power starts it. brand new starter, bench tested before install. battery was bought in july.

Sounds like the battery. Have it load tested. Just because it shows 12v, doesn't mean it has the power to start the car. It should actually have 12.6v when fully charged.
Re: 95 Z won't start unless jumped
alternator is working good. just went out and battery has been sitting for an hour and it has 12.8 volts and it fired right up. i will keep checking and then if its the same i will have it tested.
Re: 95 Z won't start unless jumped
Battery cables easy and cheap. Might be a good idea anyways if you suspect them. Doubt it would be that if you cleaned both ends good. Starters can bench test good and be bad.
Re: 95 Z won't start unless jumped
would pulling the injector fuses and measuring the volts while cranking be the same as a load test? if so i only have between 6-8 volts. the battery was boughten in july but im sure it could be bad, right?
Re: 95 Z won't start unless jumped
No, it takes special equipment to do a load test. Just take the battery in and have it done.
Re: 95 Z won't start unless jumped
I would still test the alternator since your battery is so new and already bad. Something must be happening to ruin it that fast. Free easy test at auto parts stores.
