"95" SS Loss of power

New member here AWESOME site....Thanks!

Ok I know this is most likely a repeat question but i have searched and have done a few fixes that have been suggested through older posts.

What i have going on is a loss of power within the rpm ranges of 1500- 3500.
I have a 1995 SS 6spd with 179000 miles. vehicle upgrades are a slp ram air induction intake w/ functioning hood and Magnaflow cat back exhaust.

I have recently just purchased this vehicle and made a 600 mile trip. the first 300 miles were outstanding lots of power and throttle response was amazing. when i got to my destination i changed the oil. I am now running castrol synblend 5w30 with a factory GM filter. on the return trip I noticed a slight drop in performance and a rattle from the exhaust ( Cat ) and a loud exhaust leak from the drivers side engine compartment. The exhaust leak has become greater within the last few days so I figure that the Cat was plugged. I removed the material from the Cat and reinstalled it for trouble shooting purposes til the new one arrives. Problem kind of solved! exhaust flow is greater but performance is still not where it was. I then replaced the fuel filter and nothing changed.

I have not removed a plug yet ( tomorrow ) I have no idea of the maintenace records for this vehicle but I am boggled on how 300 miles can change a vehicles demeanor. There are Zero Codes stored and oil pressure is running from 18 psi (idle) 30 psi (3000 rpm). Areas that i have noticed that could be a cause is the clutch ( slippage ) and also just a basic tune up! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

There was no "SS" option in 1995. The first model year for the 4th Gen SS was 1996.

Sounds like the high back pressure due to the plugged cat may have blown out some of the exhaust manifold gasket. If you have a leak in the exhaust, before the O2 sensors, it going to cause the engine to run excessively rich.

I had been noticing a higher rate of fuel usage in the last couple days and noticed the rich fuel smell from the tail pipes. I will change direction and go after the exhaust leak first. Thanks Injuneer for the advice on where to start first.

Ok not to be an *** about this and i appologise if i come off that way! I am new to this site and i dont want to make any enemies within my first post. I have been a first, third and now a fourth gen Z28/SS owner and love these cars as much as most that own them and would like nothing more than to gain as much knowledge as i can, so please help me understand the validity of the 95/96 SS model upgrades so I can find out if mine is a true SS!

Everything i have read states is that my Camaro is a true SS. It has all of the correct badging, the SLP Ram Air induction kit, Body Kit/ Spoiler, Bilstein Shocks, hurst shifter and the 17" Torque Thrust II rims. The Build date on the door sticker is May 1995. This indicates a mid year vehicle. Unless this vehicle was sent back to SLP for the upgrades later on which i Highly doubt since the vehicle has been in this small desert california town since new or Gm sent some early Z28's To SLP early on to start getting them to dealership showrooms early.

Is there any way I can Do a Vin Tracker On my vehicle to find out what cars were sent to SLP? Id realy like to know since I bought this car with the thought it is an SS and if its not Id like to Put it back to What it should be. Im still going to be in denial till I see a vin listing and my car is not on it.

I'd recommend you goto www.SLPONLINE.com and take a look. You'll see that they don't list a 95 SS. Try contacting SLP themselves...they'll help you figure out if your car is an SS or not. Unfortunately, just about everything that makes a SS is available and a person could build a car to SS specs without it actually being one.

I'm going to guess you don't have an actual SS but I could be wrong....

there will also be a badge with a car number on the ash tray lid behind the shifter.

if its an SS, its a 96.

i believe that the 95 6 speeds had a single cat and the 96 has dual cats. the 95 autos (or some of them) had dual cats. if youve got one cat, its not a real SS.

id say that a 96 could have been built in mid 95. they did build the cars as a Z28 spec'd out (high speed tires) so that SLP could do the SS conversion on it.

Many 96 cars were built in 95...but were 96's, not 95's.

California cars had the dual cats setup earlier so that isn't necessarily going to help.

The best way, if you still have questions, is to contact SLP and ask for a birth certificate. They'll ask for the VIN and the result will be known right there.

Good luck!

You could also look on the drivers door for the options tag. Should have a R7T for the SS option. Also, 10th digit in the vin code will be the model year. S=95, T=96.

Hope that helps.

also didn't the SS's come with 16'' ZR-1's, and not torque thrusts. Go a head and replace the exhaust gaskets to at least get rid of the noise and it also may fix your problem.

The convertible's came with the 16" ZR1's, the coupe's were the 17" ZR1's. I called SLP on mine when I first got it, they told me the build date and what order number it was. That would be your best bet on finding out what it is, plus they never put TTII's on anything SLP.

Well at this point I have to accept that my car isnt a true SS but I cant really bitch since I purchased this car for 2,500 bucks. So I will put the Z28 badges back on and be happy with my car.

Well I investigated the exhaust leak today and found that the drivers side exhaust flange gasket has blown out. Well heres my dilemma, I went to my local GM dealer and did a search for the gasket and the GM parts Data base does not list one. Does anyone have A GM part number that i can give to my dealer or a source where i can get the gaskets online. Thanks!
